Clothes dryers are getting all fancy and efficient

They are the energy hogs of our households. Clothes dryers, especially electric ones, suck up gobs of one's to blow hot air at wet clothes. They have essentially been the same for decades, unable to entitled to the Energy Star designations that other household appliances have won for slimming down their energy appetites.

Two decades ago, electric dryer slim xtreme reviews power-use stickers said they gobbled 900-plus kWh of electricity annually. Most stickers say the same task today. (The faded one on our dryer from 17 years back says 926 kWh).

A certain amount of energy produces a certain amount of warmth. That reality has constrained dryer design.

But change is beginning to blow in, along with a sprinkling of dryers have won Energy Star status.

Breakthroughs are starting to reach, spurred partly by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency contest.

There's been no miracle in squeezing more heat out of electricity. Instead, the advances are coming with better sensors, software, and recirculated heat.

Moisture sensors which are more accurate gauge when a load of garments is dry enough and shut off the heat. Over-drying is one of the inefficiencies of old-style dryers.

Another approach would be to run dryers at lower heat, but longer, which utilizes less electricity. You will find steam cycles to get rid of wrinkles and lower the requirement for ironing. And cycles targeted at specific kinds of fabric.

A good example of the brand new thinking may be the Samsung DV457 dryer, which is controlled with a computerized touchscreen and can link to a smartphone for remote control. The DV457 won the EPA's Emerging Technology Award.

But everything fanciness is expensive. The DV457 sells undiscounted for approximately $1,500 US. That's only for the dryer. Its companion washer is about the same price. Cnet.com did a review, with video.

Less glitzy machines incorporating energy-saving features have learned to arrive in stores, and ones that are much more efficient take presctiption the horizon, spurred by new U.S. standards that come into effect in January 2015. Some of the people models will be eligible for a Energy Star designation by using around 20 per cent less energy "than conventional models without having to sacrifice features or performance," says an article on the Energy Star website.

Also coming to the North American market are condenser as well as heat pump dryers, which have been more common in Europe, where higher discovered another means have made them attractive. Instead of blowing hot moist air outdoors, they extract moisture and recycle the new air. This means they need a tank to carry the extracted water, or perhaps a method to pump the water right into a drain, typically the same one used by the washer.

Condenser as well as heat pump dryers -- also marketed as ventless dryers -- don't require a hole in an exterior wall for venting. Not having that hole helps you to make a house more energy-efficient. Ventless dryers may also be useful in apartments where putting a hole with an outside wall is impractical.

Individuals have complained that some condenser dryers send heat in to the room, which makes it uncomfortably hot. That appears to become a smaller amount of a problem with electric dryers, for expensive but possess a more complex mechanism for extracting moisture and recirculating heat.

Prices for that new-age dryers are nearly certain to be higher than for conventional ones.

If you're in the market for a dryer the coming year, it might be worthwhile to do the mathematics on if the higher cost of the energy-efficient unit is going to be balanced by electricity savings.

Basic name-brand old-style dryers can sell for $500 to $800.

The Canadian Home Depot website lists a "compact" condensing dryer for $1,248.

Whirlpool Corp. issued a news release in July saying it might start selling dryers with heat pump technology in Canada in 2015.

Whirlpool announced its first Energy Star dryer in June.

Nature Park preserves Richmond's boggy past

A visit to the Richmond Nature Park is akin to stepping back in time. And it's often described this way by park interpreters.

But, better, the park represents a period continuum--an environment emerging from the last ice age 25,000 years ago meizitang strong version that--affected by ever-changing ecology, has evolved into what exists today.

Relaxing in her office within the 200-acre park, geographically almost exactly in the centre of the island, co-ordinator Kristine Bauder is encompassed by a unique blend of nature that has largely disappeared from a lot of the rest of Richmond.

"Up to half of Richmond used to be bog, a peculiar sort of wet land that is typically present in much colder regions," she says. "It's also known as an arctic remnant."

Bog began to spawn on Lulu Island about 8,000 years ago, following a development of the delta that formed because the ice began retreating. It took too long for the delta lands to rise sufficient to create the stage of early plant growth and some deposition of soil and organic matter.

"Lulu Island didn't exist prior to the last (ice) age," says Bauder. "The plate we're sitting on was actually pushed down by ice weight and where Richmond has become was actually underneath the ocean. As the ice melted the weight was lifted and also the land began to rise again, and the sentiments from the retreating glacier washed down stream. It's why we have Lulu Island in the mouth of the Fraser River in which the fresh and brine merged."

The first stuff that would have grown around the emerging islands would likely have been much like what you might find today around the outer edges of Richmond, still affected by the ocean tide. Bauder says the soft soil conditions and wave action would have gone on thousands of years before enough sediment accumulated, together with increasingly drier conditions, to set happens for an additional community of plants to tolerate the changing conditions. Eventually enough water--that wasn't being washed away through the tide--accumulated in the centre of the island that a keystone species inside a bog began springing up. Sphagnum moss typically grows only in colder areas, such as those found today in the Yukon, with an average temperature Ten to fifteen degrees Celsius cooler compared to the low Mainland.

A spongy, extremely slow-growing plant, sphagnum doesn't seem like much but Bauder says it greatly influences its immediate community producing an acidic-like environment (dead sphagnum, also referred to as peat) which is well suited for growing cranberries and blueberries for which Richmond well known. Even though it is still not unusual at the nature park, its presence is rapidly diminishing.

"We're seeing some real alterations in the bog within the last 20 years, and we're losing some altogether," says Bauder. "We haven't seen seen any sun dew in three years, a result of many factors together with a dropping level."

Where bog is typical inside a cold environment such as the Yukon and Northwest Territories, says Bauder, this far south it's rare. But as it began to warm here following the ice age, the wet, squishy-like conditions where water pooled and remained undisturbed for centuries, proved to be a perfect breeding ground.

"We have wonderful peat soils in Richmond due to the fact this area was once largely bog," says Bauder. "But, as a result of a mix of things, regretfully I believe we're going to lose a lot of the bogs, not only on Lulu Island but through the Fraser River low lands.

"Richmond is being heavily affected by human activity, and we are the only city in Canada that has a dyke around its entire circumference. To have a thriving bog you need a very high water table, and throughout Richmond that's being reduced."

As humans, we have a huge desire to want to preserve things because they were, which Bauder says in part explains the attraction towards the bog habitat that can help to define the character park. She credits the vision and resolution of a passionate group of people in the early 1960s for the nature park's existence. In 1962 the citizens encouraged the town to think about acquiring 217 acres of federal land for park use. It took until 1968, however, when Will Paulik, secretary from the Richmond Rod & Gun Club, co-authored and submitted an offer for the utilisation of the land that plans finally started to take shape for that nature park. Today, the Richmond Nature Park is among only two such centres--the other being the Lynn Valley Ecology Centre in North Vancouver--in the Lower Mainland.

"With the value of land and it is insufficient availability, to possess a big piece of land such as this is important," says Bauder, who with colleagues is resolved to continue to help make the nature park relevant to residents and future generations.

Bauder says the park averages about 80,000 visits per year, with many of these including a visit to the character zi xiu tang slimming capsule house interpretation centre. She says besides a well-established and popular series of education programs, and lots of visits from elementary school classes, a lot more individuals are visiting the park after school hours.

"It's becoming the backyard for a lot of people and that is a brand new new angle for us to explore," she says. "We're looking to perhaps change our play area making it more welcoming for families, and to provide even more for children to do--encouraging them to explore after that."

Seven Questions for Lori Harrigan-Mack

What's been the largest challenge of The Biggest Loser to date?
Peeling back layers of emotions which i hid for a long time and didn't really deal with. I can't say the physical part is easy, but dealing with the sentiments that got me overweight in the first place is the hardest thing I've done.
How did this chance come super slim pomegranate capsule about?
I really like watching the show. I had been one of those people who would take a seat on the couch and eat while I watched. One of my teammates from the Olympics called me and asked if I desired to get it done. She'd the opportunity but she had lost 30 pounds, so she did not have enough weight to lose to qualify to be on the show. So she'd handed me over to one of the casting people, and that i filled out the applying. I didn't have enough time to wrap my brain around it and talk to my hubby. We'd to make our decision within 24 hours, after which it happened so fast. I found L.A. and was on the show. After i reached the ranch [where the show's contestants have to stay], I don't think I'd realized things i had done.
You've attributed your weight gain to some poor diet, several miscarriages and depression. Overcoming excuses is one thing you hear a great deal on the program. What's been your biggest excuse?
It's been a number of things. Each time I got pregnant it had been, "I can't really exercise" because I was so scared of miscarrying. I didn't know if it had been something which I had been doing. So after I might have the miscarriage, then I would be depressed. I would simply have that "I don't care" feeling. But then after i got from my depression, I was feeling a bit better [and then] I'd just always employ the excuses of "my time-table is too busy; I have my son to take to school and homework to complete." I would always just develop something that would put myself last and everyone else first.
As of Episode 4, which aired October 2, you're down 25 pounds from the 301 at the first weigh- in. Would you have forfeit the load without going on the show?
If this opportunity came up, I wasn't sure what I was going to do, but I believe it was a part of God's plan for me. After i got here, I started questioning, "Did I must come here and expose myself like this, or could I have tried it at home." Obviously, I completely believe that anybody can do that at home. However, within the emotional state I had been in--this is something which i truly needed. And I am so humbled and grateful towards the show, since it is saved my entire life.
Ultimately this is a competition against yourself, but regardless of whether you stay on the show is partly determined by the way your cast mates perform. Has the competitive athlete in you come out in this process?
Absolutely. One thing that's driven me to be here the most is knowing which i possess the support from my husband and my son. They need me to battle and wish me to be here. After i think about going home, I browse around in the other contestants and I start getting on myself saying, "You can compete with these folks. Why are you not competing and getting in the game?" That's definitely been a huge thing, so I teeter back and forth from "I'm homesick, and I miss my family," to "You can beat these folks. The reason for not fighting?" Then my competitiveness arrives, and that i go to the gym. My athletic side has definitely kicked in.
After the show has wrapped, will you try for kids again?
My husband wrote us a letter that brought me to tears. He said, "I we do hope you love me enough when we are together again that people can talk about having children, because I would like to possess a little girl-whether it's having or adopting a girl--and have her be just like you." Of course, I'd love to have more children. I'm 44, and so i don't know how realistic that's for me. One, it's a financial thing as far as when we tried in vitro or anything else, but even adopting is really a financial thing.
How have you ever changed since beginning your journey on the show?
I definitely have a more positive outlook about dealing with life and stress. I understand my relationship with God has got stronger. Whenever you arrived at the ranch and you've got no electronics or no TV, it can make you determine who you are and what you want or what sort of outlook you need to have. It's changed not only me as person, but it has truly strengthened my marriage. My spouse and i have dealt with so much pain of all the single miscarriage, I think God has pulled us apart to heal us separately.
Letter-writing is definitely a lost art, and my husband's letters happen to be beautiful and also have motivated me to the point where Personally i think like our marriage is in a totally different place. I feel like I am returning a completely different person [with] a brand new heart and positive outlook. I'm ready to go home and work out how I will implement my healthy life back into my old one.
It has been ten years since you last competed in the Olympics. Have you cease working out afterward or were you just trying to take your life down a different route?
Once i retired in 2004, it had been very hard to transition back to my normal life. That was from playing on the nation's team for 12 years and visiting the Olympics. I lived out of my suitcase, and that i was on the highway a great deal. You play at the very highest level of our sport. So, when I came home it was definitely hard to mentally transition into "you just returned from the Olympics, you won a gold medal, now return to work, and put your clothes back in a drawer and go back and be the standard Lori just before 12 years ago."
Of course, in my mind, physically I wanted to consider a rest, but one of the most popular stuff that started for me was the transition from retirement to going back into normal life. I simply went back to work and it was trying to become this normal person, and that i had just met my husband at that time. I was thinking about getting married, but in 2006, 2 yrs once i retired, I'd my first miscarriage. Shortly after that, I had been pregnant with our son. After that point is how the load gain really slowly became a problem, because I had our son after which after that the multiple miscarriages started happening where the depression happened even more. It simply became more and more hard to lose the weight and have the need to even lose it.
Have you attempted to lose the weight previously?
The older you get your metabolism changes. I usually attempted to get back into getting healthier and slimming down, and it just became progressively difficult with everyday struggles and life. I think this is where the excuses are available in. I have been on every diet there's as well as in my head as an athlete I understand that dieting and exercise may be the only way it is going to sustain. Instead, I took the easiest way out and tried every diet that there is and exactly what I possibly could to lose it. It was only a spiral effect with everything else I was dealing with emotionally.
You work in security at Mandarin Oriental. Have your employers been supportive?
Oh, my goodness, yes. My boss was supportive because the first time I mentioned it to him. I am grateful to them because there are very few bosses who are likely to bless what you're doing and say, "Please, go look after yourself," particularly with me to be the director of security and running a department. It speaks volumes to what kind of company they're.
I was fortunate enough after i helped MGM Resorts International to have them support me 7 days herbal slim extra within my Olympic career and today afterward to possess Mandarin do this. -- This complete experience in the show to Mandarin and to my family and everyone else, I'm just completely humbled at the support that I've had and it's not at all something I will take for granted. It's just motivating me much more to make sure that I maintain the healthy way of life after I'm done [with the show].
