Better interventions to combat pediatric obesity: a chat with Kurbo Health

San Francisco-based seed fund investment firm Rock Health recently held Rock Health Rounds, a celebration for practicing physicians to preview some of its healthcare startups. We previously st nirvana herbal slimming capsule covered ThriveOn, which aims to bring psychotherapy to a wider audience using web and app based tools.

Kurbo Health, another Rock Health company, has established a mobile platform that aims to assist parents and pediatricians guide overweight and obese children to lose weight safely and effectively.

We interviewed Joanna Strober, CEO & co-founder of Kurbo Health. Strober's experience of investment banking, investment capital, and advisor to early consumer Internet companies enabled her to guide her start-up together with co-founder Thea Runyon, charge behavior coach at Stanford University's pediatric obesity program. Kurbo Health, a 10-person start-up, recently closed $5.8 million in Series A funding.

How did you go about creating this app?

Strober: After i had this issue [of obesity with my children] and that i visited doctors, they had no recommendations for me, no real suggestions, apart from the fundamental "exercise-more, eat less". This launched my spending some time researching what was available to help parents with teens losing weight. I learned that there have been numerous exciting companies for adult weight loss, whether it was myFitnessPal or Omada Health. Additionally, I came across the Stanford pediatric weight loss program. They have an in-person program, but it was $3,500! By having an in-person visit, as a working parent, I didn't know how I had been likely to [accommodate] that.

I just remarked that we had this excellent Stanford program that actually works. Why not take this right into a mobile program, having a gamified mobile app and remote coaching. Lots of studies have indicated that for weight control, remote coaching via text, Skype and phone calls could be as effective as in-person visits, and much more accessible. Plus, kids love their smart phones--.why don't you engage them in the solution?

When have you start the mobile app adaptation?

Strober: We started May 2013, just over japan hokkaido slimming pills year ago. We licensed the fundamental program from Stanford, developed the app and remote coaching model, and started the beta in March. The beta went great. 85% of the kids reduced their BMI.
